About the program
The Yaebo Players is open to students who have completed 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grade this past school year. They rehearse Monday-Friday. The emphasis of the group is on refining skills of performance. We would like each student to not only grow as an individual, but also develop their understanding of ensemble work.
“Many moons ago in a far off place. Lived a handsome prince with a gloomy face….”This year the high school is going for light and funny fair (following the edgier Chicago two years ago, and the very introspective Theory of Relativity last year). Once Upon a Mattress is the slightly madcap retelling of the “Princess and the Pea” story. The show marked Carol Burnett’s first starring role on Broadway and has been a classic ever since.
Auditions will be held at the Play Inc Gallery on Wednesday night, June 9th beginning at 7:00. Auditions will consist of a prepared solo (usually about one verse), and a cold reading (or multiple readings) from the show. We generally prefer to hear songs from the show, but any song will be fine. After the individual solo, you may be asked to prepare a different song from the musical, so we can hear different things. A pianist will be provided but know that he/she may not be able to sight read a piece for you that isn’t from the show.
As usual copies of the songs can be obtained by contacting Mr. Knudsvig. If you are singing a song from a different source, please provide sheet music for the pianist.
Rehearsals for this group will be from 9:00am -12:00pm Monday through Thursday as well as 9:00am -3:00pm on Fridays (with a few exceptions). Rehearsals for June and part of July will be at Cambridge Middle School and will start in the choir room most days. A typical rehearsal would include one to two hours of music rehearsal and the rest spent on choreography and staging. As much as possible, we will continue to work staging outside to reduce possible Covid spread.
The tradition of “I Sing the Body Electric” will return this year and all performers are expected to be at the performances for the middle school production to be a part of this unifying song. For those unfamiliar, this is an annual song that we perform with all the high school and middle school performers to unify the program.
*Registration for all performers is $200 and limited to 35 performers. Registration will be open until May 21st.
