About the program

The Yaebo Players is open to students who have completed 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grade this past school year (already or turning 15 by Sept. 1st, 2026).  They rehearse Monday-Friday. The emphasis of the group is on refining skills of performance. We would like each student to not only grow as an individual, but also develop their understanding of ensemble work.

The Yaebo Players will be presenting a new adaptation of the classic operetta, Pirates of Penzance, entitled…Pirates! The Penzance Musical.  Using a lot of the original songs and incorporating many other songs by Gilbert and Sullivan, this adaptation resets the hilarious tale in New Orleans, and puts a swing on the music by giving it all a jazz style treatment.  This is definitely a Pirates for a new era!

Auditions

Auditions will be held at the Play Inc Arts studio on Monday, June 1st  starting at 6:30 pm. Auditions will consist of a prepared solo (usually about one verse), and potentially a  cold reading from the show.  We generally prefer to hear songs from the show, but any song will be fine. After the individual solo, you may be asked to prepare a different song from the musical, so we can hear different things. A pianist will be provided but know that he/she may not be able to sight read a piece for you that isn’t from the show.

As usual, copies of the songs can be obtained by contacting Mr. Knudsvig.  If you are singing a song from a different source, please provide sheet music for the pianist or a backing track to perform to

Rehearsals

Rehearsals will formally begin on June 9th.

Rehearsals for this group will be from 8:00am -12:00pm Monday through Thursday as well as 9:00am -3:00pm on Fridays (with a few exceptions).   Rehearsals for June and part of July will be at Cambridge Middle School A typical rehearsal would include one to two hours of music rehearsal and the rest spent on choreography and staging.  In the middle of July, rehearsals transition to the Richard G. Hardy Performing Arts Center at Cambridge-Isanti High School.  It is expected that everybody attends all rehearsals unless the director is notified.

Body Electric

The tradition of “I Sing the Body Electric” will continue this year and all performers are expected to be at the performances for the middle school production to be a part of this unifying song.  For those unfamiliar, this is an annual song that we perform with all the high school and middle school performers to unify the program.

Registration will be open until May 1st or until the program is full (last year registration filled up within two days of opening.  The previous two years, programs have filled up within three days of opening, and students were then placed on a waiting list.  Not everybody from the waiting list got accepted into the program due to space.

*Registration for all performers is $300–includes Play Inc sweatshirt and Pirates t-shirt.
