About The Program

The Junior Theatre Troupe is open to students who have completed grades 5 through 8 who will be at least age 11-14 (or turning 11 by Sept. 1, 2024).  They rehearse Monday-Thursday at Cambridge Middle School from 1:00-4:00. The goal of the program is to expose students to theatre and the various aspects that go into creating a full musical production. Students will learn the basics of singing, acting, and dancing as well as many other things.

This year the Junior Theatre Troupe will be presenting, Matilda, Jr..  The junior versions of Broadway musicals are shortened versions of the original and are adapted for performance for younger students.  Matilda, Jr. is an adaptation of the Roald Dahl’s classic children’s book.  Matilda has astonishing wit, intelligence... and special powers! She's unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Matilda's school life isn't completely smooth sailing, however – the school's mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don't abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils' saving grace!

Auditions

All middle school students who register for the Junior Theatre Troupe will be in the show, however everybody must go through the audition process. Auditions are used to cast leads and smaller parts in the production. Those not receiving speaking parts, will be part of the chorus. Nobody who registers will be denied the opportunity to perform. We will spend the first three days of rehearsal going over the audition pieces and preparing students for those auditions. On the fourth day we will hold auditions and the next day post the cast list of roles and chorus.

Rehearsals and Expectations

Rehearsals will take place from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm Monday through Thursday. A calendar of specific rehearsal requirements will be provided at the first day of rehearsal and a full schedule of events and rehearsals will be posted on the website. Rehearsals for the first few weeks will be held at Cambridge Middle School and move to Cambridge-Isanti High School the Monday before performances.

Body Electric

Also, note that attendance at the three performances of “I Sing the Body Electric” during the high school production of Newsies  is required. This final song is a unifying aspect of the program, and it is expected that all middle school and high school Summer Youth Theatre participants attend.  Attendance at the final dress performance of Newsies will be expected (for free) for the students, so they know how long the show is and when to show up on the other nights.

Registration will CLOSE on MAY 3rd  or when the program is full (last year’s program filled up within two days of registration opening).

*Registration for all performers is $200–includes Play Inc sweatshirt and Matilda, Jr.  t-shirt.
